Nova is a witch who lived in the shadows but finds her way into the magical community at the beginning of the book after being caught by the Magisterium of Preternatural Affairs for stealing. She is an uninitiated witch, so she doesn't have a brand. Nova chose this path to blend and not attract attention - until now, at least. She is a time catcher, that means she has an ability to break through veils time - as for now, only short periods. The state she enters when she looks into the past is called fata morgana. Nova has one of the extremely rare types of magic, and therefore it attracts the interest of those who become aware of it.
